About This Candle I believe it's as simple as this: If you write, you're a writer. You do not need to be published. You do not need to be critically acclaimed. You really don't even need to consider yourself talented. Life is too short for perfection. If the desire to write is there, chances are you're already writing in some form. Although maybe in a different form than your passion . . . so why not make time for your passion? I created this candle as a way to light the proverbial fire under my proverbial butt--with the proverbial pen in hand--writing my book about the importance of rest. May it help create the time and space to express your voice and your passion, too! —Carla Blazek, creator, zena moon |

1. If You Want to Write: A Book About Art, Independence and Spirit
Avg.
Customer Rating:
From Amazon.com: This book so
speaks to the contemporary writer that it is nearly impossible to believe that
it was originally published in 1938. In
If You Want to Write,
Brenda Ueland sets forth not just a philosophy about how to write or how to
create, but also about how to live. Beginning writers will certainly be
encouraged by Ueland's words, but even the most experienced have much to glean
from Ueland's simple wisdom. "Everybody," writes Ueland in the opening
chapter, "is talented, original, and has something important to say." Finding
that something important involves embracing creative idleness ("the
imagination needs moodling--long, inefficient, happy idling, dawdling and
puttering"), freeing "what we really think, from what we think we ought to
think," and "thumb[ing] your nose at all know-it-alls, jeerers, critics,
doubters." One must think, she says, "of telling a story, not of writing it."
And when revising one's writing, she advises, "do not try to think of better
words, more gripping words.... It is not yet deeply enough imagined." Finally,
"whenever you find yourself writing a single word or phrase or page dutifully
and with boredom, then leave it out.... If what you write bores you, it will
bore other people." And just because
If You Want to Write
is passionate, sincere, and even spiritual, do not think it is not also witty.
One footnote bluntly declaims, "No doubt my terms would horrify a psychologist
but I do not care at all." Elsewhere Ueland titles a chapter "Why Women Who Do
Too Much Housework Should Neglect It for Their Writing." Amen, sister!
2. Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life

From Amazon.com: Think you've got a book inside of you? Anne Lamott isn't afraid to help you let it out. She'll help you find your passion and your voice, beginning from the first really crummy draft to the peculiar letdown of publication. Readers will be reminded of the energizing books of writer Natalie Goldberg and will be seduced by Lamott's witty take on the reality of a writer's life, which has little to do with literary parties and a lot to do with jealousy, writer's block and going for broke with each paragraph. Marvelously wise and best of all, great reading.

From Amazon.com: Filled with great advice and much encouragement for beginning writers. Goldberg's primary piece of advice is to "keep your hand moving", i.e., let yourself keep writing and let your thoughts keep flowing. This exercise is crucial to removing the internal censor within that seeks to control what we attempt to write. It's this "going with the moment" and loss of control over our thoughts that Goldberg says will "free the writer within" as the book's title suggests. I have read many books on writing technique and I believe that what Goldberg offers that many others don't is an acknowledgment that the meaningful events we seek to share and write about can be found deep within us. They merely must be appropriately tapped, which is attainable through some of the exercises she offers. This process gives writers the encouragement they need to actually initiate their writing and will form the basic foundation upon which the writing develops. I recommend this book particularly for those novice writers that have trouble getting started.
1. Debussy for Daydreaming: Music to Caress Your Innermost Thoughts Original Release Date: 1995
Avg. Customer Rating:
From Amazon.com: Debussy is easy on the mind and this collection captures that sound magnificently. Known for style of rhythm and color, here is grouping of snapshots of serene landscapes, seascapes which take the listener away to these serene, romantic scenes. With a wide array of instruments, such as harp, piano, flute, viola and orchestra, this flowing work captivates and charms. We're especially fond of "Maid with the Flaxen Hair" with its oboe intro and sensuous, lulling melody which envelopes the ears bringing its warmth and peace. Along those same musical lines, the piece "Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun" is enchanting in its tenderness. Some of the most beautiful piano classics come from this composer, such as Claire de Lune (here done by full orchestra) and Arabesque No. 1. Whether Debussy fan or newcomer, Debussy for Daydreaming is worthy in one's collection to relax, and even daydream with.

1. Adaptation
(2003) ~ DVD
Avg. Customer Rating:
From Amazon.com: Twisty brilliance from screenwriter Charlie Kaufman and director Spike Jonze, the team who created Being John Malkovich. Nicolas Cage returns to form with a funny, sad, and sneaky performance as Charlie Kaufman, a self-loathing screenwriter who has been hired to adapt Susan Orlean's book The Orchid Thief into a screenplay. Frustrated and infatuated by Orlean's elegant but plotless book (which is largely a rumination on flowers), Kaufman begins to write a screenplay about himself trying to write a screenplay about The Orchid Thief, all the while hounded by his twin brother Donald (Cage again), who's cheerfully writing the kind of formulaic action movie that Kaufman finds repugnant. By its conclusion, Adaptation is the most artistically ambitious, most utterly cynical, and most uncategorizable movie ever to come out of Hollywood. Also starring Meryl Streep (as Susan Orlean), Chris Cooper, Tilda Swinton, and Brian Cox; superb performances throughout.
2. The Man from Elysian Fields
(2001) ~ DVD
Avg. Customer Rating:
From Amazon.com: Add The Man from Elysian Fields to the list of essential movies about the pains of writing. This wry comedy-drama charts the frustrations of a financially strapped novelist (Andy Garcia) as he desperately and secretly agrees to be an "escort" for ladies who need, ah, escorting. This leads him into a Faustian bargain to help a beautiful client (Olivia Williams) whose husband, a once-great, now-dying writer (a mighty James Coburn), is struggling with a final work. Of course the fact that the men are sharing a project and a woman complicates matters--and Garcia's loyal wife (Julianna Margulies) is curious about all these nights spent away. The movie explores different levels of compromise and betrayal, yet it remains tartly amusing throughout. And it has a glorious casting inspiration: the director of the mysterious escort service is played by Mick Jagger, looking decadently elegant and purring like a vaguely satanic Siamese cat.

Customer Rating:
From Amazon.com: Jeff Bridges demonstrates once again that he is one of the finest actors in film. Ted Cole (Bridges, Seabiscuit, The Big Lebowski), a successful writer/illustrator of children's books, invites a young student named Eddie (Jon Foster) to be his assistant for a summer. Eddie doesn't realize he's being drawn into the middle of a dissolving marriage until Ted's wife Marion (Kim Basinger, L. A. Confidential) invites him into an affair--which Ted both condones and resents. Slowly, Eddie comes to understand the secrets that are tearing the marriage apart. Bridges never shows off; everything he does seems simple, natural, almost unavoidable, but it's also utterly watchable. Whether you like the movie will depend on whether you like John Irving (The Door in the Floor is based on part of his novel A Widow for One Year), but Bridges' performance is undeniable. Also featuring Mimi Rogers (The Rapture). | |||||||||
