About This Candle

The need for comfort is universal, yet the ways we comfort our Selves are as individual and personal as our taste in shoes. In the phenomenal The Woman's Comfort Book, Jennifer Louden writes: [Comfort] is that warm, safe feeling you get from lying in bed watching the rain fall, knowing you don't have to go out of the house if you don't want to. Comfort is a place to fortify yourself."

I created this candle during an extended period of grieving, when I needed more support and comfort than I could summon. Rather than automatically open the fridge every time I needed to feel comforted (which I did for a while and gained 10 pounds), I wanted a way to wrap my arms around myself and ask myself, "How can I best care for my Self right now? What do I truly need?" Lighting this candle helps me focus within to find the answer. The Woman's Comfort Book and Comfort Secrets for Busy Women help me explore new ways to fill that need. The book, music and movie recommendations are from my own comfort library. Carla Blazek, creator, zena moon

P.S. For fans of our seasonal autumn candle, comfort is also scented with mulled cider. Its yummy scent and colors alone will comfort and delight your senses.

1.  Comfort Secrets for Busy Women: Finding Your Way When Your Life Is Overflowing

by Jennifer Louden (Paperback - 2003)

Avg. Customer Rating: 5.0 out of 5 stars

     A zena moon Essential Book

From Amazon.com: Never before have I read a self-help book where the author starts out by admitting her own failures. Wait, to clarify: Sure, self-help authors talk about the failures of their PAST-- the ones that they've overcome and are now teaching about. Jennifer, instead, talks frankly about how she quit listening to her own advice and felt hypocritical teaching others how to nurture themselves when she was living a "cavernous" life. This made me believe her, because I knew she wasn't going to blow sunshine up my derriere for the rest of the book. She speaks my language, too-- this book isn't about guilting yourself into doing more, planning more, organizing more, but about slacking off and taking things at your own pace and listening to yourself. I love her humor, her insight, and her warmth.

Comfort Secrets for Busy Women is not a book to read once and put away on your shelf, for each page is packed with wisdom to be digested slowly over time. Take modest steps. Learn to recognize the symptoms that you're getting "out of harmony." Throw away perfection. Learn the difference between pleasure and happiness. Not all brand new concepts, but presented in a new and appealing way that made me feel more confident that I, like this "imperfect" narrator, could actually accomplish these goals. None of it felt like a lecture; it all felt like solid and friendly help from someone who had been in my shoes. I enjoyed following this author's journey and am optimistic that I will make real life changes as a result of having read this book. An excellent choice for all the women out there who do too much and nurture themselves too little.

3.   The Seven Whispers: Listening to the Voice of Spirit

by Christina Baldwin (Hardcover - 2002)

    Avg. Customer Rating:

From Amazon.com: The connection with our spirit is like a phone line, explains Christina Baldwin in The Seven Whispers. "Sometimes I turn the ringer off. Sometimes I ignore the ringing. Sometimes I pick up the phone with suspicion. Sometimes I get impatient with the interruption." The irony, of course, is that "unlike a lot of other calls, the one from Spirit is the one we are hoping to receive." Baldwin (Life's Companion) excels in helping readers converse with the divine. Here, she devotes a chapter to each of the "Seven Whispers of spiritual commonsense":

1.)  Maintain peace of mind ("the cornerstone of a spiritual life")
2.)  Move at the pace of guidance ("rehumanize our speed of life")
3.)  Practice certainty of purpose ("a commitment to figuring out why we are here and what we are going to do about it")
4.)  Surrender to surprise (this helps us "practice the resilience we need to respond to whatever life offers")
5.)  Ask for what you need and offer what you can ("become spiritual traders of life's energy, time and abundance")
6.)  Love the folks in front of you ("look for the good in people even if we don't think it's there")
7.)  Return to the world (remove yourself from the simulated world and "return to the world of the body, the senses, the world of Nature")

This is a compact book, packed with a wise woman's spiritual homilies. While no one can make Spirit phone home more often, Seven Whispers will eliminate the static and make for a better connection.

1.   African Lullaby

    ~ Various Artists (Audio CD)
    Original Release Date: 1999

Avg. Customer Rating: 5.0 out of 5 stars

A zena moon Essential CD

From Amazon.com: As with other Ellipsis Arts releases, African Lullaby is more than a stellar music collection. Its delightful liner notes provide ample context for these "love songs for children" and the collection's innovative earth-friendly packaging is a work of art unto itself. Commencing with the bewitching Zulu harmonies of Ladysmith Black Mambazo, "Thula Mtwana" sets the tone, creating an atmosphere of warmth, safety, and peace, and is followed by a baker's dozen that reflect the gentle rhythms of an abundantly diverse continent. "Kounandu Deni" marries the dancing melody of Malian guitar and African harp with lyrics of paternal providence. Broadway's Sarafina! and The Lion King cast member Ntomb'khona Dlamini wails soulfully on "Thula Thula," and "Chitsidzo" is a mystical reverie of parental love and spousal longing accompanied by the intense beauty of a mbira (thumb piano). Standing head and shoulders above others in its class, African Lullaby is testimony to the awesome power of music.

2.   Whale Rider (Score)

    ~ Lisa Gerrard (Audio CD)

    Original Release Date: 2003

Avg. Customer Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

A zena moon Essential CD

From Amazon.com: Former Dead Can Dance member Lisa Gerrard imparts her own mixture of the ethereal, the worldly, the emotionally abstract, and the purely beautiful to all of her projects. She's been universally recognized and acclaimed for her body of work, received a Golden Globe and was Oscar-nominated for the Gladiator soundtrack. She has also worked on such high profile movies as Ali and The Insider. This release is a soundtrack for the New Zealand indie film Whale Rider, already the biggest grossing film in New Zealand ever. Gerrard's music, combined with the motion picture, provides an experience of profound power and spiritual enlightenment.

1.   A Rumor of Angels

    Starring: Vanessa Redgrave, Ray Liotta

    (2002) ~ DVD

Avg. Customer Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

A zena moon Essential Movie

From Amazon.com:  A Rumor of Angels is based on Grace Duffie Boylan's Thy Son Liveth: Messages from a Soldier to His Mother, a 100-year-old little book containing inspiring messages about the afterlife. Co-writers James Eric and Jamie Horton were intrigued by its suggestion that death is a new beginning and communication with the dead is possible. Director Peter O'Fallon (Suicide Kings) also was intrigued by this material and joined them in updating the story to contemporary times for the screen. The result of this collaboration is a soul-stirring drama, bolstered by exceptionally strong performances by Vanessa Redgrave and Trevor Morgan, about the dynamics of grief, the importance of cross-generational friendships, and the nature of love. The idea that death is not the end but merely a transition is a common tenet in most of the world's religions. It's no wonder, then, that despite a lack of hard evidence and scientific proof, millions of people around the globe claim to be in some form of contact with deceased loved ones. This deeply spiritual film taps into the meaning and consolation that can result from these afterlife communications.

2.   Eat Drink Man Woman

    Starring: Sihung Lung

    (1994) ~ DVD ~ Subtitled in English

Avg. Customer Rating: 4.8 out of 5 stars

From Amazon.com: This is not a movie to see on an empty stomach. Writer-director Ang Lee's 1994 Oscar nominee tells a family story about a chef and his three daughters through the meals the chef prepares and serves his family. This touching, dryly funny story of a family coping with personal lives and the way those lives intersect with the family relationships captures a shift in generations in Taipei. The father, a famous chef who has lost his taste buds, still cooks, though he draws no pleasure from eating. His daughters, meanwhile, deal with both the disappointments and surprises of daily living and the way their adult lives compare to the expectations the widowed father had for them. A subtle, amusing--and mouth-watering--comedy of impeccable manners.

3.   Out of Africa

     Starring: Meryl Streep, Robert Redford

     (1985) ~ DVD

Avg. Customer Rating: 4.3 out of 5 stars

A zena moon Essential Movie

From Amazon.com: Sydney Pollack's 1985 multiple-Oscar winner is a sumptuous and emotionally satisfying film about the life of Danish writer Karen Blixen (Meryl Streep), better known as Isak Dinesen, who travels to Kenya to be with her German husband (Klaus Maria Brandauer) but falls for an English adventurer (Robert Redford). The film is slow in developing the relationship, but it is rich in beautiful images of Africa and in the romantic tone surrounding Blixen's gradual discovery of her life and voice.
