1. Passing for Thin : Losing Half My Weight and Finding My Self
Avg.
Customer Rating:
From Amazon.com: Frances Kuffel had been obese all of her life,
coming of age and beyond feeling like a freak. For years, she struggled with
her weight until, at forty-two, she lost an incredible 188 pounds. Transformed
at last into the “normal" woman she always dreamed of becoming, Kuffel found
herself unprepared for life on the planet of the thin. With unflinching
honesty and a wickedly dark sense of humor,
Passing for Thin is the
first memoir to take readers on the incredible journey from fat to thin,
shining a light on the shared human experience of feeling, at times,
uncomfortable in our own skin.
After a life of obesity robbed her of the joys of having lovers, a husband,
children--and even made it impossible to enjoy a movie, when standing in line
was too painful, or travel, when airplane seats were too small--Kuffel was
catapulted into a strange new world where she didn’t speak the language and
didn’t know the rules. While other girls had already learned how to flirt and
date, and while other women her age had long-ago lost their teenage
self-consciousness, Kuffel became an awkward adolescent in a body she did not
know how to use. In
Passing for Thin, she
shares her clear-eyed account of moving from observer to player, while
struggling to enjoy the freedom and pleasure her new shape has given her.
As Kuffel gradually comes to know--and love--the stranger in the mirror, she
learns that this body does not define her, but now frees her to become the
woman she's always wanted to be.
2. Fat Girl
Avg.
Customer Rating:
From Amazon.com: In her memoir of growing up fat, Moore, who previously wrote about food in Never Eat Your Heart Out, employs her edgy, refreshingly candid voice to tell the story of a little girl who weighed 112 pounds in second grade; whose father abandoned her to a raging, wicked mother straight out of the Brothers Grimm; whose lifelong dieting endeavors failed as miserably as her childhood attempts to find love at home. As relentless as this catalogue of beatings, humiliation and self-loathing can be, it's tolerable--even inspiring in places--because Moore pulls it off without a glimmer of self-pity. The book does have some high points, especially while Moore is stashed at the home of a kind uncle who harbors his own secrets, but the happiest moments are tinged with dread. Who can help wondering what will become of this tortured and miserable child? Alas, Moore cuts her story short after briefly touching on an unsatisfying reunion with her father and her two failed marriages. The ending feels hurried, but perhaps the publication of this book will give Moore's story the happy ending she deserves.

Fit From Within
is a must-read for everyone trying to lose weight and keep it off. It is not a
regular diet book; actually it is far from a diet book, as it tells you not to
diet but to eat as a healthy person. There are no menus, recipes or success
stories but there is plenty of good advice that will provide you with
everything you need to know to change your body and your life. To let go of
the diet mentality and start eating as a healthy person is an important
message in this book. You do this by eating three meals a day while sitting
down, eating good delicious food that you enjoy, in portions that will satisfy
your hunger, and making water your beverage of choice. But remember healthy
people do not stuff themselves with salty greasy fast food! The author guides
you to realizing your spiritual self and surrendering your life to God to be
able to come to grips with your life and your eating habits. Don't worry, no
preaching here, but do give thanks before and after meals! Another focus of
the book is on living a good quality life all the way and not postponing your
life until you reach your target weight. Stay centered in today, wear clothes
that you like in your current size, groom yourself like a racehorse, develop
your mind and talents, laugh and play and get plenty of sleep. As for
exercise, walk more, join a friendly gym or discover yoga, don't do too much
too soon or it will backfire! Above all be patient--this has to be for the
long haul. As the author says, "If you want only a different body, and not a
different way of life, you can't expect the body changes to last, because
there will be nothing to sustain them. In other words, you can't just lose
weight and go to business as usual without becoming overweight as usual. This
has to be for the long haul."

From Amazon.com: Everyone grows up... even rappers. Pioneering female MC Queen Latifah shows a newfound level of maturity on The Dana Owens Album. A set of standards the rapper/actress decided to cover, the album features a host of jazz classics and R&B favorites. Latifah is at her seductive best when playing the sultry siren on Al Green's "Simply Beautiful." With a little help from Green himself, Latifah's vocals slide over the warm, organ-drenched instrumental. The result is one that works today as well as it would have several years ago. Similarly, the big band-backed "Baby Get Lost" swings with bluesy groove that is pure nostalgia. However, it's when Latifah mines more standard fare that the album seems to hita snag. Fans of James Moody's "Moody's Mood for Love" may want to skip Latifah's version, as it misses the subtle perfection of the original. Her rendition of "I Put a Spell On You" doesn't falter, but it's not impressive either. It ends up being the kind of performance that finds you constantly waiting for more but never getting it. The same can be said for her cover of the Mamas & the Papas' "California Dreamin'." That said, with Latifah's recent critically acclaimed turn in the film Chicago, this album's timing couldn't have been better. And with help from legendary producer Arif Mardin (Aretha Franklin), The Dana Owens Album is an interesting and impressive new chapter in the star's diverse career.
2. Charlie's Angels: Music from the Motion Picture (2000 Film [SOUNDTRACK] Original Release Date: 2000
Avg. Customer Rating:
From Amazon.com: As modern and contemporary as the new Charlie's Angels is supposed to be, the soundtrack, with the exception of a few new offerings from Destiny's Child, Aerosmith and Fatboy Slim, is a nostalgic mix tape of 1970s and '80s hits. The older songs are fun and ripe for a party: Tavares's "Heaven Must Be Missing an Angel," Marvin Gaye's "Got to Give It Up (Part1)," and Deee-lite's "Groove is in the Heart" are certain to please a crowd. The new tracks, with one notable exception, are weak and contrived. Destiny's Child offers "Independent Women (Part 1)," an empty declaration of female self-reliance (aren't we over this already?). Aerosmith's "Angel's Eye" is, in a word, terrible. The exception is Caviar's "Tangerine Speedo," a trip-hoppy lounge groove that packs a sassy punch. All in all, Charlie's Angels is a solid purchase, but in spite of, not because of, the new material.

From Amazon.com: The naughtily titled Immaculate Collection culls 15 of Madonna's Top 10 singles from 1984 to mid-'90, plus two new ones that continued the run (the dirty, trunk-bumping funk of "Justify My Love"--a Lenny Kravitz production that justifies his entire career--and the danceable desperation of "Rescue Me"). Rooted in disco and classic AM pop from girl groups and ABBA to Strawberry Alarm Clock, Madonna made savvy, touching music throughout her first golden era. These tracks retain their sonic and historical significance while, like "She Loves You" or "Rocket Man," still brightening any space they're being played in. Far more than just a wise, irreverent image-maker--like the Beatles or Elton, come to think of it--Madonna during these years was the gift that kept on giving, forever fresh, sexy, hooky, and joyously sharp.
(2002) ~ DVD
Avg. Customer Rating:
From Amazon.com: While My Big Fat Greek Wedding broke box-office records in 2002, Real Women Have Curves did a better job of keeping it real. Set in the vibrant environs of East Los Angeles, with a breakthrough performance by Latina newcomer America Ferrera, this comedic drama takes a familiar subject--a bright teenager struggling to define her identity--and turns it into an authentic celebration of feminine empowerment. Eighteen-year-old Ana (Ferrera) has scholarship potential, her first boyfriend, and a chubby figure that her similarly overweight mother (Lupe Ontiveros, perfectly cast) won't stop harping about. Mom insists that Ana work in her sister's dressmaking sweatshop, continuing a family tradition that can only break her spirit. How Ana defies this fate--and how director Patricia Cardoso captures the proud tenacity of several full-figured seamstresses--is what makes this film (adapted from a play by Josefina Lopez) so uniquely refreshing. Greek Wedding made more money, but Real Women--which is just as funny--makes a lot more sense.
2. Walk Away the Pounds 2-Pack: Super Fat Burning + Get Up and Get Started High Calorie Burn (2004) ~ DVD

Customer Rating:
From Amazon.com: Let me start by saying I am the most uncoordinated person ever. I've got a whole library of fitness DVDs sitting around collecting dust thanks to the Walk Away the Pounds series. I can't stress how much this DVD has helped me change my life. Since November 2004 I have dropped 50+ pounds and I'm still dropping! I usually workout every single day, interchanging the 1, 2, and 3 mile workouts. In general though, I get the 3-mile workout in at least 3 times a week. I have also begun to train with the FIRM parts series now that I have developed more endurance and energy. I know I'll reach my goal thanks to Leslie and her workouts. What's made this so effective for me is the EASE and SIMPLICITY of the workouts. You have absolutely no excuse not to do them. This coming from someone who absolutely HATED exercise, and now I can't live without my 3-mile walk a day.
