About This Candle

My friend Claudia requested this candle for two reasons: 1.) To motivate her to exercise; and 2.) To light a fire under her husband's procrastinating butt. She swears merely having much less lighting the candle works like a constant tap-tap reminder ("you gonna do it? huh? when?") until she cries uncle and climbs on the treadmill. My personal procrastination du jour is working on my book, so I burn this candle to hush the wily voices who whip up a million excuses why I can, should and must put off my writing.

This candle is wonderful whenever you need that little extra boost of motivation (or gentle pestering) to do what your heart of hearts knows is necessary and good for you! —Carla Blazek, creator, zena moon

1.   Snap Out of It: 101 Ways to Get Out of Your Rut and Into Your Groove

by Ilene Segalove (Paperback - 2004)

    Avg. Customer Rating:

From Amazon.com: Snap Out of It is in the words of the author, "an inquiry, a solution, and a total tune-up." It invites us to consciously stop, reactivate, regroup, and delight in being alive. And it is a tonic of renewal and nourishment for our tired bodies, minds, and souls. Check out the 101 simple activities based on tried and true childhood fun, a little Chi Qong, some applied educational kinesiology, and a lot of innate intelligence. Our neurological systems [and us] thrive when we engage our five senses--sight, smell, touch/movement, sound, and taste. By unraveling the knots of habit, we can reawaken our spirit of play and bust out of our daily grind into a place of vitality, creativity, and ease." Adding even more spice to this already energetic romp, Segalove offers zany and juicy bits of her own life-stories (Segalove was friends with Rita Hayworth's daughter and created light-shows with Rita and Prince Ali Khan) along the way to shed further light on the sense at hand.

2.   Do It! Let's Get Off Our But's

by Peter McWilliams (Paperback - 1994)

    Avg. Customer Rating:

From Amazon.com: I picked up this book at a time I was in a major rut: I was in an unfulfilling job and enduring a bad relationship. It was no wonder that I fell into a state of depression. After reading this no-nonsense self help book, I realized that the only thing stopping me from being happy and reaching my dreams was myself! After much soul searching and serious trepidations I made significant changes in my life, ones which were terrifying, but necessary, so that I could pursue my dream of becoming an elementary school teacher. To achieve this goal I quit my job, ended my relationship, sold my house, and moved back home with my parents. Three years later, I have a Bachelor of Arts Degree and have just completed my Bachelor of Education Degree. Now there is nothing stopping me from living out my dream of being a teacher. This book helps you realize that whatever it is you want in life, you CAN achieve it, no matter where you're starting from.

3.  Simple Acts of Moving Forward : A Little Book About Getting Unstuck

by Vinita Hampton Wright (Hardcover - 2003)

    Avg. Customer Rating:

From Amazon.com: Sometimes, even the most creative people feel stuck--they battle writer's block, wrestle with a family problem, or struggle with feelings of burnout. Wright offers 60 shrewd tips on moving forward during these times, from the simple (read a different newspaper, change your routine) to the spiritual (pray, look to God for inspiration) and the joyful (sing, feast, and get naked, though not necessarily all at once). Wright's suggestions are helpfully grounded in her own experience as a novelist who leads retreats on creativity and spirituality. The book is designed so that it can be picked up at random, and readers can choose whether to implement quick tips that take just a few moments, or work on larger issues such as nurturing colleagues, confessing their own faults, and forgiving themselves. Wright's voice is gentle yet honest as she urges readers forward toward greater fulfillment.

1.   Monkey Business

~ Black Eyed Peas (Audio CD)

    Original Release Date: 2005

Avg. Customer Rating: 4.8 out of 5 stars

From Amazon.com: As with their last hit, Elephunk, Black Eyed Peas' new disc Monkey Business is a joyful cross-genre journey with musical props to hip-hop, rock, folk, funk, and pop. The reason the Black Eyed Peas have audience appeal that crosses over many styles is because the band members are such obvious fans of diverse music. Nowhere is this more apparent than on Monkey Business’s high-profile guest list. After Justin Timberlake’s contribution to the massive "Where Is the Love" breakout hit from Elephunk, their inclusion of big names once again was a smart, respectful move on the part of the band as well as their guests. "My Style" is Timberlake’s BEP foray number two; while the song is funky pop fun, those looking to hear Justin in the forefront are likely to be disappointed, as his vocals are mixed evenly, no sweet soulful solos this time. Other guests of note are Jack Johnson, who cowrote the bling-bashing "Gone Going," Sting on "Union" (sonically inspired by the former Police-man’s "Englishman in New York"), while funk legend James Brown contributes to a scorching soul track dubbed "They Don’t Want Music." The contribution of female vocalist Fergie--who joined the band partway through their last CD--has raised up considerably on the band’s fourth disc, their second as a quartet. Sassily fronting her way through songs like "My Humps," the "Hey Mama"-esque "Dum Diddly" and the first single "Don’t Phunk With My Heart," Fergie’s melodic contributions make for a record that will likely be heard by wider audiences than ever, making this a truly accessible hip-pop CD.

2.   Music for Motivation

~ Andre Campra, Marc-Antoine Charpentier, George Frederic Handel (Audio CD)

    Original Release Date: 2000

Avg. Customer Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

From Amazon.com: Music for Motivation joyously invites action. Highly organized compositions of Mozart, Handel, and friends focus minds and sharpen thinking. Many selections are simplified to give the mind room to reflect and reorganize. Violins sing, woodwinds incite, and trumpets sound the clarion call: Get the job done and have fun!

3.   Racine

    ~ Sass Jordan (Audio CD)

    Original Release Date: 1992

Avg. Customer Rating: 4.8 out of 5 stars

From Amazon.com: Move over, Alanis. Step aside, Jewel. Sass Jordan, a singer and songwriter from Montreal, could give most singer-songwriters attitude lessons. She's got a strong, gut-deep voice, and on Racine, her second album, she does as the album title implies and goes back to her roots. The result is a fine selection of rock and roll, with more than a hint of the blues in it. "Make You a Believer," "Time Flies," and "Who Do You Think You Are" are especially strong, showing off Jordan's voice to its best advantage. Bypassing the women-in-rock movement entirely--you're unlikely to find her performing at the Lilith Fair--Jordan heads straight for the rock. Not nearly as well known outside of Canada as she should be, Sass Jordan is well worth discovering for yourself.

1.   Amélie

     Starring: Audrey Tautou

     (2001) ~ DVD

Avg. Customer Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

From Amazon.com: Perhaps the most charming movie of all time, Amélie is certainly one of the top 10. The title character (the bashful and impish Audrey Tautou) is a single waitress who decides to help other lonely people fix their lives. Her widowed father yearns to travel but won't, so to inspire the old man she sends his garden gnome on a tour of the world; with whispered gossip, she brings together two cranky regulars at her café; she reverses the doorknobs and reprograms the speed dial of a grocer who's mean to his assistant. Gradually she realizes her own life needs fixing, and a chance meeting leads to her most elaborate stratagem of all. This is a deeply wonderful movie, an illuminating mix of magic and pragmatism. Fans of the director's previous films (Delicatessen, The City of Lost Children) will not be disappointed; newcomers will be delighted.

2.   Shine

    Starring: Geoffrey Rush

    (1996) ~ DVD

Avg. Customer Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

From Amazon.com: This tearjerker by Australian filmmaker Scott Hicks is a surprising story about real-life classical pianist David Helfgott, an Australian who rose to international prominence at a very young age in the 1950s and '60s, and suffered a psychological collapse after enduring years of abuse from his father (Armin Mueller-Stahl). Hicks has three very fine actors portraying Helfgott at different stages of his life, including the adorably wry and goofy Noah Taylor (Flirting), who takes up the character's teen years, and Oscar winner Geoffrey Rush, giving a great performance playing the musician as a schizophrenic adult. Despite the Helfgotts' compromised psychological health, Shine is hardly a depressing experience. If anything, the story is really about how long one person's life can take to make glorious sense of itself.

3.   Bend It Like Beckham (Full Screen Edition)

    Starring: Keira Knightley, Parminder Nagra

    (2003) ~ DVD

Avg. Customer Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

From Amazon.com: Bend It Like Beckham is true girl power. This glorious comedy centers on Jess (Parminder Nagra), an Indian girl born in England whose only desire is to become a football--or, as we say on this side of the Atlantic, soccer--star like her idol, David Beckham; but her traditional family refuses to even consider it. With the help of her new friend Juliet (Keira Knightley), Jess secretly joins a girls' team under the guidance of a male coach (Jonathan Rhys Meyers). As the team starts to gain some attention, Jess's secret can't be kept forever. The story of Bend It Like Beckham is so genuine and detailed that it transcends all the sports-movie formulas that it also fulfills with cheeky exuberance. Wonderfully acted, and written and directed with loving care by Gurinder Chadha (Bhaji on the Beach, What's Cooking?), this movie is pure delight from start to finish.
