When I first read this quote during a time of profound upheaval in my life, I felt a flood of relief. I was in the process of changing everything—career, friendships, my support system, beliefs, patterns—and for a long time had been feeling confused, fearful and impatient.
When I read this quote, I realized that the sorrow and grief I felt needed to be acknowledged and tenderly held, rather than wished away. The truth is, we all experience wounding in our lives and we need to feel our sorrow as well as our joy, to practice compassionate self-care in the shadows as well as the light.
