About This Candle Illumination often occurs in times of darkness, yet it's equally possible in times of light--when we're paying attention. This candle was created to remind us that in order to receive illumination, we must keep our minds, hearts and spirits open beyond the limitations we're likely to impose on ourselves. Softly scented with a delicious blend of sage and rose (yum!), this elegant candle contains an amethyst stone for spiritual connection, and a lapis lazuli stone for awareness. —Carla Blazek, creator, zena moon |

From Amazon.com: No translator could do
greater justice to the gorgeous simplicity of Rumi's poetry than Coleman Barks
has done here. These exquisite renderings of the 13th-century Persian mystic's
words into American free verse capture all the "inner searching, the delicacy,
and simple groundedness" that characterize Rumi's poetry while remaining
faithful to the images, tone, and spiritual message of the originals. Barks's
introductions to each of the 27 sections (described as "playful palimpsests
spread over Rumi's imagination," and "meant to confuse scholars who would
divide Rumi's poetry into the accepted categories") are themselves wonderful
achievements of a poetic imagination; searching explanations of unfamiliar
concepts and funny stories provide colorful background and frame the
selections as no dry historical exegesis could.
While Barks's stamp on this collection is clear,
it in no way interferes with the poems themselves; Rumi's voice leaps off
these pages with an ecstatic energy that leaves readers breathless. There are
poems of love, rage, sadness, pleading, and longing; passionate outbursts
about the torture of longing for his beloved and the sweet pleasure that comes
from their union; amusing stories of sexual exploits or human weakness; and
quiet truths about the beauty and variety of human emotion. More than
anything, Rumi makes plain the unbridled joy that comes from living life
fully, urging us always to put aside our fears and take the risk to do so. As
he says: "The way of love is not / a subtle argument. / The door there is
devastation. / Birds make great sky-circles / of their freedom. / How do they
learn it? / They fall, and falling, / they're given wings."

From Amazon.com: As a primer on living the good life, few books
compete with
"The first is external. By obtaining better
clothes, better shelter, and better friends we can find a certain measure of
happiness and satisfaction. The second is through mental development, which
yields inner happiness. However, these two approaches are not equally viable.
External happiness cannot last long without its counterpart.... However, if
you have peace of mind you can find happiness even under the most difficult
circumstances."
As he has in previous books (An
Open Heart,
The Art of Happiness), the Dalai Lama
reminds us that developing peace of mind means paying attention to our daily
attitudes and choices as well as taking the time to meditate and be prayerful.
The six-part book covers Buddhist meditation techniques and visualization
exercises as well as daily thoughts and actions that foster morality and
wisdom.

This follow-up to
Vision (which features the same composer
lineup of von Bingen and Souther) is a definite step up. The lush arrangements
of Souther's synths mixed with the ethereal sequences of von Bingen combine to
form a tapestry that is not only sensual but downright erotic at times. Track
2, "O ignis Spiritus Paracliti," is a prime example. Cello's dark harmonies
with the slow, driving beat lay a rich throb to accompany Sister Germaine and
Ms. Riain's angelic melodies. Interspersed between the lyricism is Souther's
own complex, yet appealing, contrapuntal accompaniments. Fans of Delerium's
Karma, Dead Can Dance, and other
beat-driven ambient works may profit greatly from listening to

McKennitt's travels through Spain and Morocco
flavor this album with a distinctly Mediterranean tinge, from the opening "The
Mystic's Dream," with its dancing percussion arrangements, to "Marrakesh Night
Market," to "Full Circle" and the instrumental "Santiago." "Marrakesh Night
Market" is an especially strong performance, with an interesting musical
texture; the balalaika, udu drum, and dumbek are played alongside a
synthesizer. As usual, McKennitt has set a poem to music, this time Yeats's
"The Two Trees," with a lovely introduction on the Uillean pipes. There's also
"The Bonny Swans," a traditional lyric, and the CD closes with Shakespeare, as
McKennitt sets some of Prospero's words from
The Tempest to her own music. Excerpts
from McKennitt's journals, included in the CD booklet, make for interesting
reading as they shed some light on her source material and inspiration for
writing each song

From Amazon.com: Jam
Nation hero Ben Harper tones down his lap-slide guitar flash in favor of the
holy spirit for this blend of originals and gospel classics, his first
full-length album with the historic singing group. They've worked together
before, on the Blind Boys' excellent
Higher Ground and
Spirit of the Century, but here the
pairing that Harper has termed "a spiritual soul movement" sounds like an
outright tent-revival mission. His fevered wah-wah strutting and sweet high
voice take their places in the chorus alongside the raw-throated howl of Blind
Boys leader Clarence Fountain and his fellow bass George Scott, who plead for
salvation like powerful old lions on "Take My Hand." The group's alto, Jimmy
Carter, sails over the funky, hiccupping blues beat put down by Harper's
Innocent Criminals on the classic "Satisfied Mind." The best cut may be
Harper's "Picture of Jesus," a country-music-informed adventure in old-school
church harmonizing with the passionate power to touch souls.

Brad Pitt plays Death with a
capital D, enjoying some time on Earth by inhabiting the body of a young man
who'd been killed in a shockingly sudden pedestrian-auto impact. Before long,
Death has ingratiated himself with a wealthy industrialist (Anthony Hopkins)
and pursues romance with the man's beautiful daughter (newcomer Claire Forlani),
whom he'd briefly encountered while still an earthbound human. Under the
assumed identity of "Joe Black," he samples all the pleasures that corporeal
life has to offer--power, romance, sex, and such enticing pleasures as peanut
butter by the spoonful.
But Death has a job to do, and
