About This Candle

In March 2005 my life burst wide open during a weeklong retreat co-facilitated by the fiery, sweet, shape-shifting shaman lioness, movement pioneer Camille Maurine. Day after day, Camille created the very safest of spaces as she led us through oftentimes scary and awkward (for us) explorations of our bodies and souls. We howled, crawled, sang, stripped, collaged, improvised, screamed, danced, laughed, play-acted, and cried. My God, the tears we shed -- sobs, snot and all -- as we revealed ourselves and witnessed one another with infinite tenderness and awe.

It was terrifying work. I wanted to skip every one of Camille's exercises. It's a helluva lot easier (i.e., controllable, comfortable) to sit around and talk blah-blah, which is why most of us experience most of our lives from the neck up. Hushing the mind and surrendering judgment allows the body and soul to express their wisdom, truths and needs. Think of how throughout the world, dancing is a sacred form of cultural expression and storytelling. I believe it's also why yoga is so überpopular here in our own culture.

But, thank God, I did every one of Camille's exercises, because at the fabulously ripe age of 41, I fell in love with my body and soul. Y'know, that euphoric, head over heels, where-have-you-been-all-my-life kind of love? I spent a week focused entirely on how and what my body felt (vs. looked) -- absorbing only sensations of being loved, held, petted and accepted. Honestly, I never knew my body and soul were so awesome and had so much to express! I never knew how to listen to them before. I didn't know how to tap into them as the motherlode of my creativity. For the first time, I understood what it meant to get out of my own way. And the truly awesome joy that happens simply by allowing (vs. planning or forcing) the unknown out to play.

Now, of course, I'm back on terra firma and need help remembering to get out of my lovable yet oh-so-limited head. This candle is an incredibly precious and important reminder that we are so infinitely much more than what we think. I bless your body. I bless your soul. May this candle help us connect to those deeper, richer, brighter places we all want to live from. Carla Blazek, creator, zena moon

2.   The Woman's Retreat Book

by Jennifer Louden (Paperback - 1997)

Avg. Customer Rating: 4.7 out of 5 stars

   A zena moon Essential Book

From Amazon.com: Jennifer Louden, author of The Woman's Comfort Book, gives women a do-it-yourself guide for creating solitude. Because women tend to nurture relationships more than they nurture themselves, it is often a challenge for women to carve out the space and time they need for private renewal and reflection. Louden offers women inspiration and specific advice on how to retreat within their own homes, as well as how to create rejuvenating weekends and vacations. She even devotes a full chapter to the most pivotal stage of any retreat--the successful re-entry into home, family, and community.

3.  Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom

by Christiane Northrup (Paperback - 1998)

    Avg. Customer Rating:

   A zena moon Essential Book

From Amazon.com: This guide goes far beyond standard self-help books, assessing women's health within the context of their work, families and society. The author, a holistic physician specializing in obstetrics and gynecology, seeks to illuminate the basic conditions of women's lives that lead to their health problems. A founder of Women to Women, a clinic that practices within the context of conventional medicine, Northrup, in 17 years of caring for women, was led to take a holistic view of women's health. She cites dramatic and affecting cases of women healing from long-term illnesses, through alternative medical methods such as herbal medicine, dietary changes and relaxation techniques. The book begins with an exploration of how society influences the way in which women think about and care for their bodies. Part two provides a comprehensive description of women's anatomy and includes a list of conditions and concerns from fibroids to hysterectomy. The book's third portion discusses what type of guidance to look for in a health care provider: it is essential, Northrup says, to develop a working partnership with a health care team. Her work is based on the belief that the cultural context of a woman's life affects her mental and physical health. And so, women must learn that their wounding, if any--physical, psychological and spiritual--is part of a larger cultural wound. Northrup's book is as accessible as it is empowering.

1.   Shaman's Breath

~ Professor Trance & Energisers (Audio CD)

    Original Release Date: 1995

Avg. Customer Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

A zena moon Essential CD

From Amazon.com: My prior introductions to Tribal Music consisted mainly of drumming, or chanting, with some background orchestration. Nothing that really moved me, or excited me for more than a few tracks before it seemed monotonous. That was until I stumbled across Shaman's Breath. From beginning to end, the album is great for moving meditations, straight dancing or even just giving you a rhythm to clean the house to. The first track starts out with talking behind the music telling you a little about the origin of dance and trance. The rest of them are just amazing music and sound. You cannot listen to this album without wanting to move, stamp, rock, sway, and breathe! For someone who has never felt moved enough to write a review, I highly recommend this album. If you are looking for Tribal/Shamanistic/Trance/Drumming music, Shaman's Breath is the one you have waited for!

2.   Tribe

~ Gabrielle Roth & The Mirrors (Audio CD)
    Original Release Date: 2000

Avg. Customer Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

From Amazon.com: This album is great, as are all of her previous albums. If you like James Asher or Professor Trance, you will love Tribe. If you have no idea who these folks are, but you want earthy primal rhythmic music to move you, you will still love Tribe.

3.   Talking Timbuktu

~ Ry Cooder, Ali Farka Toure (Audio CD)

    Original Release Date: 1994

Avg. Customer Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

From Amazon.com: Talking Timbuktu is a groundbreaking record that vividly illustrates the Africa-Blues connection in real time. Ali Farka Toure, one of Mali's leading singer-guitarists, has a trance-like, bluesy style that, although deeply rooted in Malian tradition, bears astonishing similarity to that of John Lee Hooker or even Canned Heat. It's a mono-chordal vamp, with repetitive song lines cut with shards of blistering solo runs that shimmer like a desert mirage. Toure may be conversant with some blues artists, but it is unlikely that artists like Hooker or Robert Pete Williams ever heard these Malian roots, which makes the connection so uncanny. Ry Cooder, well versed in domestic and world guitar styles, is the perfect counterpoint in these extended songs/jams, his sinewy slide guitar intertwining with his partner's in a super world summit without barriers or borders.

1.   Frida

     Starring: Salma Hayek

     (2003) ~ DVD

Avg. Customer Rating: 4.2 out of 5 stars

A zena moon Essential Movie

From Amazon.com: Salma Hayek makes up for many bad movies with her fierce performance in this sumptuous film. Hayek plays the Mexican surrealist painter Frida Kahlo, whose tempestuous life with her unfaithful husband, muralist Diego Rivera (Alfred Molina), drives the story of Frida. Maverick director Julie Taymor (Titus, the Broadway stage production of The Lion King) pulls out a wealth of gorgeous visuals to capture everything from the horrific bus accident that damaged Kahlo's spine to her and Rivera's trip to New York City, where Rivera's political leanings ruptured a commission from the Rockefeller family. Though the script spends too much time telling us how great Frida's painting is (rather than trusting in the power of the images themselves), Taymor's dynamic energy and Kahlo's forceful personality give Frida genuine emotional impact. The superb cast includes Roger Rees, Valeria Golino, Ashley Judd, Geoffrey Rush, Antonio Banderas, and Edward Norton.

2.   Lost - The Complete First Season

     Starring: Matthew Fox

     (2004) ~ DVD

Avg. Customer Rating: 5.0 out of 5 stars

From Amazon.com: Forty-seven people survive a plane crash on an island somewhere in the Pacific. Each brings their own story and past to the island, and this dictates how interact with each other. This is the story of Lost, the television show by J.J. Abrams which twists the minds of viewers as he tells the tale of the survivors, their attempts to leave the island, and the fact that they are not alone on the island. The leader of this group is Jack, a doctor with father issues that he is willing to put behind him to protect the forty-six other survivors. As the survivors come to realize that they will not be rescued, they delve deeper into the island, learning the secrets of an expedition sixteen years ago and dealing with the mystical creatures that plague them. Lost is a brilliant TV show that explores the human psyche and how it reacts in events of extreme stress and turmoil.

3.   Dirty Dancing

     Starring: Patrick Swayze, Jennifer Grey

     (1987) ~ DVD

Avg. Customer Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

From Amazon.com: As with Grease (1978) and Footloose (1984) before it, Dirty Dancing was a cultural phenomenon that now plays more like camp. That very campiness, though, is part of its biggest charm. And if the dancing in the movie doesn't seem particularly "dirty" by today's standards--or 1987's--it does take place in an era (the early '60s) when it would have. Frances "Baby" Houseman (Jennifer Grey, daughter of ageless hoofer Joel Grey) has been vacationing in the Catskills with her family for many years. Uneventfully. One summer, she falls under the sway (as it were) of dance instructor Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze). Baby is a pampered pup, but Johnny is a man of the world. Baby's father, Jake (Law and Order's Jerry Orbach), can't see the basic decency in greaser Johnny that she can. It should come as no surprise to find that Baby, who can be as immature as her name, learns more about love and life--and dancing--from free-spirited Johnny than traditionalist Jake.

Dirty Dancing spawned two successful soundtracks, a short-lived TV series, and a stage musical. It may be predictable, but Grey and Swayze have chemistry, charisma, and all the right moves. It's a sometimes silly movie with occasionally mind-boggling dialogue--"No one puts Baby in a corner!"--that nonetheless carries an underlying message about tolerance and is filled with the kind of exuberant spirit that's hard for even the most cynical to resist. Not that they'd ever admit it.
