About This Candle After I created the woof! candle for dogs, my cat-loving friends Jim & Michelle hinted at plots of feline discrimination. I don't have a cat--or, should I say, I am not owned by a cat--but I was born in the Chinese Year of the Cat and although I wouldn't say I'm a cat-lover by nature, I have known several outstanding cats I've positively adored. So! To Digit, Cosmo, Jinx, Caesar, Elliott (a tabby named after my dog), Jewel and Daisy: I am delighted to celebrate you and all your feline relations with this candle. 1. I Am the Cat, Don't Forget That : Feline Expressions

From Amazon.com: Shaff and Blount, who previously charmed pet lovers with I Am Puppy, Hear Me Yap and If Only You Knew How Much I Smell You, return with this ode to the cat, which takes the form of cute black-and-white photos accompanied by silly but often clever little poems ("Yes, I knocked over/ the candelabrum./ And now I’m on the sofa./ What is the problem?"). From Dr. Suessian quatrains ("I’m a cat,/ Can’t you see?/ You can’t get/ Over on me") to darker, more Edward Gorey-esque rhymes (" ‘Eat that,’ you say, ‘that’s good!’/ Tell a cat about a cat’s food. / You know what’s good?/ Rat’s blood"), humorist and author Blount, a frequent guest on the NPR quiz show Wait, Wait… Don’t Tell Me, acknowledges the feline’s peculiar mix of pride, sloth, curiosity and independence. Shaff’s photos may owe more to the charm of their subjects than to skilled composition, but all are perfectly serviceable and some are downright delicious.

Adamson recounts her adventures as the surrogate mother of an orphaned lion cub named Elsa (with parenting duties shared by her husband George and by a delightfully imperturbable rock hyrax named Pati), whom she raised as a welcome member of her human and animal family while painstakingly teaching Elsa the skills she would need to survive in the wild. Her teaching, against all odds, was effective: three years later, the Adamsons took Elsa to a place near that of her birth and set her loose, hoping that she would find her "real pride" among other lions of the Kenya grasslands--as she soon did.
Long targeted to preteen readers, Born Free is in fact a sophisticated work of environmental consciousness-raising, for Joy Adamson believed that any relationship between humans and wild animals had to be conditioned by an attitude "of absolute equality quite different from that between a dog and his master." Although Elsa's story had an ultimately tragic ending--the young lioness died of disease and, in separate incidents, Joy and George Adamson were both murdered--Joy Adamson's book continues to instruct and entertain readers of all ages.

From Amazon.com: I haven't seen the movie, but after hearing this CD, you can bet I will. The music is so true to the 1920's style of music. I couldn't keep from tapping my feet to the tunes. Kirsten Dunst sings "After You've Gone" and she does a fabulous job. I highly recommend The Cat's Meow if you're interested in 1920's music.

martial arts fantasies, traditionally squeeze poor acting, slapstick humor,
and silly story lines between elaborate fight scenes in which characters can
literally fly.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
has no shortage of breathtaking battles, but it also has the dramatic soul of
a Greek tragedy and the sweep of an epic romance. This is the work of director
Ang Lee, who fell in love with movies while watching wuxia films as a
youngster and made
Crouching Tiger
as a tribute to the form. To elevate the genre above its B-movie roots and
broaden its appeal, Lee did two important things. First, he assembled an
all-star lineup of talent, joining the famous Asian actors Chow Yun-Fat and
Michelle Yeoh with the striking, charismatic newcomer Zhang Ziyi. Behind the
scenes, Lee called upon cinematographer Peter Pau (The Killer,
The Bride with White Hair) and legendary
fight choreographer Yuen Wo-ping, best known outside Asia for his work on
The Matrix. Second, in adapting the story
from a Chinese
pulp-fiction novel written by Wang Du Lu, Lee focused not on
the pursuit of a legendary sword known as "The Green Destiny," but instead on
the struggles of his female leads against social obligation. In his hands, the
requisite fight scenes become another means of expressing the individual
spirits of his characters and their conflicts with society and each other.
The filming required an immense effort from all
involved. Chow and Yeoh had to learn to speak Mandarin, which Lee insisted on
using instead of Cantonese to achieve a more classic, lyrical feel. The
astonishing battles between Jen (Zhang) and Yu Shu Lien (Yeoh) on the rooftops
and Jen and Li Mu Bai (Chow) atop the branches of bamboo trees required weeks
of excruciating wire and harness work (which in turn required meticulous
"digital wire removal"). But the result is a seamless blend of action,
romance, and social commentary in a populist film that, like its young star
Zhang, soars with balletic grace and dignity.

gangsters one by one to see if their bare bodies contain the tattoo she seeks.

Not an ideal choice for younger kids,
this hip and violent animated feature from Disney was nevertheless a huge
smash in theaters and on video, and it continues to enjoy life in an acclaimed
Broadway production. The story finds a lion cub, son of a king, sent into
exile after his father is sabotaged by a rivalrous uncle. The little hero
finds his way into the "circle of life" with some new friends and eventually
comes back to reclaim his proper place. Characters are very strong, vocal
performances by the likes of Jeremy Irons, Nathan Lane, and Whoopi Goldberg
are terrific, the jokes are aimed as much (if not more) at adults than kids,
the animation is sometimes breathtaking, and the music is more palatable than
in many Disney features. But be cautious: this is too intense for the
Rugrats crowd. | ||||||||||
