About This Candle Every Christmas, there comes a moment when I seek out solitude to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas. Late at night after everyone's asleep, I'll sit in the dark by the light of the Christmas tree and think about what it must have been like for a teen-age Mary giving birth when she herself was so young and undoubtedly overwhelmed. I'll think about Joseph and his faith. I'll think about Jesus and the huge hope this baby provided to the world. I'll think about how all great things have humble beginnings. I'll remember loving Christmas Eve services when we sang "Silent Night" while lighting each other's candles one by one until the whole congregation held a burning candle, softly singing this song.
